Welcome to Burwood Stud

Noel & Christine Denning started Burwood Stud over 40 years ago, as a spelling farm for young horses and broodmares.

Burwood was the dream of Noel & Christine, who raised their three children on what is now regarded as one the prime standardbred studs in Australia and Queensland’s leading nursery.

We are proud to have our son, Jonathon & our grandson, Caleb now helping to keep the dream alive. We also now have Jonathon’s wife Megan, helping out with office duties and social media. We always remember “If You Enjoy What You Are Doing, It Doesn’t Feel Like Working”

Starting with a small farm we have expanded over the years to 1500 fertile acres of basalt & limestone country, ideal for the making of champion racehorses.
In the intervening years, Burwood has played host to several successful stallions in both spheres, and has built a strong, close client base, content to agist their mares and foal at our Darling Downs nursery.

We are all commercial breeders, with the entire process happening on the farm, from impregnation, through to foaling and boast an imposing strike rate with horse we have sold through various auctions.

Numerous bores and dam’s rich in calcium & minerals ensure adequate water supplies for all stock.
We cater for permanently-agisted mares and their offspring.

While offering service arrangements to the stud’s resident stallions, Changeover & Franco Nelson, Burwood also offers semen transport facilities to mare owners, thus bringing the world to your mare’s doorstep.

Not only do we breed our own horses to sell and race, but we also understand how important it is to give the expert care and dedication to produce a winner. We are there to provide support throughout all stages of the breeding and rearing of your valuable stock. Inspections are always welcome, but we would appreciate prior notification so we can make you most welcome.

With a view to the best veterinary care, we enlist the services of highly respected, internationally acclaimed veterinary surgeon Dr Francois Viljoen BVSc (Hons), to attend to all harness racing stallions, mares and foals at Burwood. Francois and his associates Dr Steve Rayner & Dr Glen Laws from Darling Downs vets are accessible at all hours, for their equine reproduction expertise.

Our resident stallions are.

Franco Nelson, son of champion Sire Christian Cullen from a winning and producing Falcon Seelster mare “Notafella Franco”.
Franco Nelson 23 races including $100,000 Bohemia Crystal FFA; Group 1 3YO NZ Sires Stakes final; Group Harness Jewels 4YO Emerald Final; beat Tiger Tara in Group 3 Hannon Memorial at Omaru as a 7YO; Group 2 NZ Welcome Stakes etc
Standing at a modest fee of $1650 he is outstanding value for money.

Changeover is a sub – 1:50 sire with Group One credits.
As such, Changeover’s siring deeds are franking those of him on the racetrack, where he paced 1:53.4 and bankrolled a sensational $2,321,677, courted of numerous Group One wins, including the time-honoured, prestigious New Zealand Cup.
